Dr. Hadia Mubarak
The Pillars Mosque is honored to welcome Dr. Hadia Mubarak as a valued scholar, educator, and community resource of knowledge and leadership.
She joins Imam John Ederer in guiding our community through lectures, mentorship, and activism rooted in Islamic scholarship and civic engagement.
Known for her energy, clarity, and compassion, Dr. Mubarak brings a unique voice to the pursuit of faith, learning, and justice.
Biography
Dr. Hadia Mubarak
Dr. Hadia Mubarak is an assistant professor of Religious Studies at Queens University of Charlotte, where she teaches courses on women and gender in Islam, Islamic thought, and modernity. Through her classes, she combines rigorous academic research with deep spiritual insight, encouraging students to engage with Islam through faith, reason, and ethical reflection.
Before joining Queens University, she served as a Research Fellow at the New York University Abu Dhabi Research Institute in the Humanities (2017–2018), where she completed her monograph Debating Divine Intent: Women in Modern Qur’anic Commentaries. In addition, she taught in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (2015–2017) and also served as a visiting lecturer at Davidson College (2015–2016).
Academically, Dr. Mubarak earned her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from Georgetown University, specializing in classical and modern Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic law, and gender reform in the modern Muslim world. Earlier in her academic journey, she completed an M.A. in Contemporary Arab Studies, with a focus on Women and Gender, also at Georgetown University (2005), and a B.A. in International Affairs and English from Florida State University (2003).
Throughout her career, Dr. Mubarak has also held key roles such as Senior Researcher at Georgetown’s Center for Muslim–Christian Understanding and Research Associate at the Gallup Organization’s Center for Muslim Studies. Across these professional and scholarly experiences, she continues to advance a vision of Islamic scholarship that uplifts moral clarity, promotes gender equity, and strengthens intellectual engagement with the Qur’an.
